Social Studies/Science: This week we started our “How Seeds Travel” science unit. We planted Marigold and Dill seeds. Over the next few weeks we will be tracking how the seeds grow with different variables.  Each seed was either placed in a pot that gets:

-Water and sunlight

-Water but no sunlight

-No water, but sunlight

-No water or Sunlight

Math: Our learning in math was spent learning how to add identify and count money.  We have learned to identify the penny, nickel, dime, and quarter and how much each is worth.  We are practicing counting sets of coins and solving money word problems.  This is an excellent skill to continue practicing at home!

Writing: In writing we continued working on our Community Helper books. We are currently in the publishing phase. The students' books are turning out great!

Reading: In reading this week we dove into a story called, “Getting a Message to General Washington”.  This story was a historical fictional story about a boy named Tom who helped get an important message to George Washington during the Revolutionary War.  We summarized, retold, used context clues to determine the meaning of vocabulary words, and compared and contrasted points of view.  We also read and analyzed a poem by Langston Hughes called “Words Like Freedom”.  We have officially wrapped up our Government Unit and will be beginning a fiction unit after Thanksgiving Break.

Veterans Day Parade Fun: We enjoyed celebrating so many wonderful veterans that attended our parade!

Reading: A passage titled, “Our Government’s Laws” was one of the stories that we read this week. We annotated the text to identify the main idea along with supporting details. We also located an example of a problem and solution. An additional story that we read was called “Community Workers.” While reading that story, we were able to practice applying our phonics concept of study “ar” and our fluency.

Writing: This week we drafted an informational piece about a government worker. Each student wrote an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Next up we will be revising and editing our informational pieces.

Math: Two-digit addition and subtraction has been the main focus of our lessons. We have been learning strategies to solve two-digit addition and subtraction problems both in isolation and in word problems.

Social Studies: We constructed government worker fact sheets to serve as a visual aid to our informational writing pieces.

Reading & Writing: This week we started our new unit called “Government at Work.” We read a story called “Smoke Jumpers.” In this story we looked for the main idea, details and how stories’ details connect to each other.

During writing this week, we were very excited to listen to 4 government workers so that we could learn all about their jobs. We heard from a police officer, nurse, firefighter and a member of the U.S. Army. We started doing our research, and each student selected a government worker that they would like to write an informational piece about.

Math: This week we started our next lesson which continues to teach strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems with 2-digit numbers.

Social Studies: We wrapped up our U.S. Symbols unit this week. We made class flags to represent our classroom. Our flags included at least 2 colors and 3 symbols that represent our class. The students presented their flags to the class and explained why they chose the colors and symbols they did.
