Math: This week we continued to practice counting coins. In addition to counting collections of coins, we worked on solving word problems involving money. We will have a test over money early next week.

Reading: This week we continued to explore different books in a series. While reading The Secrets of Droon, we practiced finding rich language and retelling the key events.

Writing: During writing, we wrote poems using different formats. Each student selected a topic and then they wrote a list poem and a conversation poem. It was fun to hear the students evaluate their work to decide which of their poems they liked the best.

ScienceEach student selected an animal that they would like to research. Everyone will use their knowledge of animal habitats to design a habitat for the animal they selected. This week we also took some time to explore our STEM bins. Each student designed their version of a shelf using STEM materials only. It was a lot of fun!

Reading: Our class has really enjoyed exploring a few different books that are a part of a series! This week we learned about how when readers love a series they can’t keep it to themselves, and so we explored different ways to share books that we love.

A special thank you to everyone that donated to our class e-wallet! Below you will find a picture of our new classroom books. The students were very excited!

Writing: During writing, we learned how to incorporate comparisons into our poems. The comparisons made our poems so much richer and a lot of fun to read. We have also been busy learning how to write in cursive.

Math: This week we learned about pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. We learned about different ways to identify the coins, and we practiced counting combinations of coins.

Science: We constructed our penguin habitats, and we had a lot of fun testing them out! Ask your child how well their penguin habitat worked.

Teach Children to Save: We enjoyed learning all about the importance of saving money. Our guest "Zoom teacher," Mrs. Bohl, taught us all about banks, saving, spending, and much more. Thank you for a great presentation!

Reading: This week we were learning about how authors really make their stories stand out with the words they use. Also, we talked about how authors think about how a book will go or even an entire series when writing their stories.

Writing: We continued talking about poetry and using our poets eyes when coming up with ideas. We also talked about finding the just right words to make our poems really strong while using only few words.

Math: This week we reviewed how to subtract and regroup across zeros, how to regroup in the hundreds place, and how to regroup in the tens place. We wrapped up the week with our math test, and I was blow away by how great everyone did!

Science: This week we tested and observed how well different types of materials insulate objects from heat. We will use these different materials to design and build out penguin habitat to try to keep our penguins cool.

Reading: This week we were learning about how knowing a character’s actions from one series book can help us better predict their actions in another book.

Writing: We began thinking about poetry and looking at everyday items with a poet’s eyes.  We also practiced taking a strong emotion and sharing it with others through poetry.

Math: We have continued learning about three-digit subtraction. We can now regroup in both the tens and the hundreds place when subtracting three- digit numbers.

Science: This week we discussed and observed how matter changes with the addition of heat.  We observed the melting of wax and the melting of ice.  We also learned how some changes are reversible while others are not.

Reading: This week we began thinking about what we know about characters found in a book series.  We are looking at character traits to help us understand the decision made across books.

Writing: We took some time to reflect on our spring break and get back into the writing habit. We also started looking into poetry which is our next writing genre.

Math: We have been learning about three-digit subtraction. So far we have subtracted hundreds and tens from the starting 3-digit number.

Science: This week we observed the physical properties of materials and discussed how the individual materials can be used together to make a single item, a pencil, and how each material is used within the larger item.
