September 1st

Reading: We have been learning about how to annotate a poem. We read the poem Foreign Lands, and we worked on identifying the theme along with important details. Turn and talk discussions with our partners have also been a big focus this week. During phonics time, we have been practicing writing words in the plural form, words with soft g, hard g, soft c, and hard c. This week we also enjoyed some good read alouds including Giraffes Can’t Dance and Ish. Check out our picture below of our freeze dance fun that we had after reading Giraffes Can’t Dance!

Writing: Our shared writing lessons have been in connection with the reading we have been doing. After reading the poem, we took time to write about a time when we discovered something new. We focused on writing our sentences with capital letters, end punctuation, and spacing. This week we also practiced using our personal dictionaries to help with spelling tricky words.

Math: The first few math lessons have been a review of different addition strategies. Some of the strategies we reviewed were: making a ten, using number lines, and using doubles facts. The students have been practicing their fact fluency using the XtraMath app on their iPads.

Social Studies: We began our week learning about the Pledge of Allegiance and flag etiquette. Our next lessons were all about U.S. symbols and monuments.
