September 9th

Writing: Shared writing time has been spent on writing about our own experiences about storms, as well as writing facts we have learned from our book, Hurricanes. The students have been doing a great job of writing about their experiences with storms. Some are writing about thunderstorms, snowstorms, and more. We have been focusing on remembering to write complete sentences with correct capitalization, spacing, and punctuation.

Reading: We have been discussing the differences between fiction and nonfiction books. We are reading a class book called Hurricanes, and are continuing to practice annotating text to record our thinking. In addition, we are seeing how we can learn more by studying the pictures. Other read alouds included Miss Smith's Incredible Storybook. During phonics time, we have been learning about long vowel sounds and the various spelling patterns used to produce long vowels. Our class also enjoyed "Flashlight Friday" where we got to read around the room with our flashlights.

Science: We started our first big science unit on plants. We are working to answer the question, “What do plants need in order to grow?” We started a class experiment by planting dill and marigold seeds that will receive varying amounts of sunlight and water. We will be observing them over the next few weeks to see which growing conditions help our plants grow best!

Math: We wrapped up our review of addition strategies for basic facts. Now, students are learning about strategies to use for subtraction facts. Some methods we have covered are making a ten, counting back on a number line, and using related facts in a number bond. The children are learning how to write the equations that make up a fact family.

Class Meeting: We are continuing to get to know each other during our daily class meetings. I love hearing the students share! We are also working on using our whole body listening skills along with eye contact at that time.
