Reading & Writing:

We enjoyed several camping themed activities this week. We wrote acrostic poems about camping, and we sent friendly letters to a first grade class. We also practiced and performed three reader’s theater plays entitled: Smores & Snores, Forest Fun, and Setting Up Camp. A few of the great books we read this week included A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee, The Tent Mouse and the City Mouse, and A-Z Mystery Detective Camp.

Math:

We reviewed this week with some camping themed math activities. Creating a graph of how we like to camp was a lot of fun! We fished for addition and subtraction facts, and we worked with a partner to solve a measurement math mystery. We also practiced our addition and subtraction with regrouping while completing some camping color by numbers.

S.T.E.M.:

We created bead maze games for our fellow campers to enjoy. They turned out really cool, and our class had a lot of fun playing with them! We also designed canoes and then we tested them to see how many pennies they could hold before sinking.

Field Day:

Blankets: We made blankets to donate to a local hospital. These adorable blankets will go to children that need a little pick me up while staying at the hospital. We think they turned out great!

Reading & Writing:

This week in reading we read the passage, “Cherokee Art Fair”, and practiced using the illustrations and text to identify important story elements. We also did some final practice on monitoring our comprehension as we read, retelling, and identifying the meaning of vocabulary words using context clues.

In writing, we continued working on our multimedia writing projects. Students created final illustrations of the beginning, middle, and end of their personal narratives. Next, they took pictures of their illustrations to add to the Keynote app. Finally, they created introduction slides and used voice recording to narrate their stories to go along with their artwork. We are now getting to listen to each other’s presentations!

Math:

We wrapped up Unit 5 by learning about even and odd numbers. Then, we reviewed the unit and took our final unit test. Please look for those in your child’s green folder.

Social Studies:

Students learned about logos and slogans. They used this information to create storefront posters to advertise the Market Day goods they created last week. Each poster had to have a business name, logo, slogan, and price of the product. Our class was able to “sell” their products to our 5th grade buddy class. They did a great job collecting money, providing customer service, tracking their inventory, and of course calculating their profit!
