January 6th

Reading & Writing:

This week we read the story The Stone Garden. Our lessons centered on making mental images as we read, using the author’s word choices to help us comprehend, and thinking about the theme of the story. We helped welcome 2024 by brainstorming goals we would like to achieve during the rest of the school year. Students wrote about their resolutions and action steps. Our phonics lessons have focused on r-controlled vowel sounds: ear, ere, air, and are.

Social Studies:

We are beginning to learn all about different regions of Native Americans. We started by defining what a region is and coloring maps of the various regions we will study. For each region, students will explore the food, clothing, shelter, and tools used by the people that lived there. We will also identify the natural resources that Native Americans used to help them survive.

Math:

This week we started a new unit on place value. Students are learning how to read and write three-digit numbers in place value charts and model them with base ten blocks.

Science:

Check out these pictures from our recent science unit where the students designed and tested out new tools that they designed.
